How to grow long-distance container shipping capacity
Aug 30,2022

The average vessel size has declined across all trade routes, except service routes related to Africa, as more medium or small vessels turn to deep sea routes.

Intra-Europe, intra-Asia and container services to Africa have been hit as liner operators shift vessels to the more lucrative Asia-Europe and trans-Pacific routes.

While intra-Europe capacity was only reduced by 5% in August 2021, Russia's conflict with Ukraine has led to the withdrawal of more capacity as many regular services to and from Russia have been suspended.

In the past 12 months, the number of ships deployed for related services in Africa has decreased from 457 to 409. On August 1, only part of the capacity loss was made up due to the deployment of larger ships of an average of 4,077 TEU (up from 3,814 TEU last year).

In terms of cellular fleet deployments, the largest route remains Asia-North America, with a 31% increase in capacity in the region in 2021. The largest ships are still deployed between Asia and Europe, currently averaging 15,217 TEU, down from 16,086 TEU in August 2021.
