The cost of air freight from China to Shenzhen

The cost of air freight will vary based on several factors, such as the distance between the loading and unloading airports, the weight and size of the goods, the type of goods being shipped, the urgency of the delivery, etc.

In general, air freight tends to be more expensive than other modes of transportation such as sea or land, but it can also be much faster and more reliable.

In order to accurately estimate the cost of air freight for your particular shipment, it is best to contact Denton Logistics, who can provide you with a quote based on your specific requirements.

How can I reduce air freight costs? Want to reduce air freight costs?

Here are some effective strategies you can use:

Optimize shipping weight and size: Air freight costs are often determined by weight and size. By minimizing the weight or size of your cargo, you can reduce shipping costs.

Consolidate your shipments: If you have multiple small shipments going to the same destination, combine them into one shipment. As we all know, the greater the weight, the cheaper the price offered by the airline. As the weight increases, the airline’s charges become relatively cheaper. The weight and corresponding cost levels are as follows :45kg, 100kg, 300kg, 500kg, 1000kg.

Negotiate the price with the airline: If your shipment volume is large, consider negotiating the price with the airline. Compare prices from different airlines to get the best deal.

Plan ahead: Expedited shipments are usually more expensive. Plan ahead and give yourself enough time to take advantage of lower prices for less urgent shipments.

By implementing these strategies, you can reduce the cost of air freight from China and increase shipping efficiency.

Air freight forwarder transport processes

How does an air freight forwarder work?

When you need to ship goods by air to a specific destination, you need to hire the services of an air freight forwarder.

To help you understand the whole process, let’s break it down step by step.

Pick it up at your supplier’s address and ship it by truck

Pack it, if needed, and deliver it to the nearest international airport

Customs Declaration Stage

Cargo by air

Customs clearance (VAT and other taxes)

Delivery to your address

Understanding these processes is essential to understanding what happens during the shipment of goods.

In addition, understanding the air cargo forwarding process will help you better understand the relevant regulations.

Cargo by air

How to calculate the charged weight of air freight from China

Actual weight VS volumetric weight

Air freight rates depend on weight, but due to limited loading space, weight is not the only parameter to consider, Sometimes freight companies will charge based on the amount of space the cargo takes up rather than the weight. This is called volumetric weight.

This is to ensure that the airline can make a profit even when transporting a large, light object that takes up a lot of space.

It’s important to know the difference between actual weight and volumetric weight, as you may be charged based on volumetric weight without realizing it.

There are two ways to calculate volumetric weight:

One is length (cm) X width (cm) X height (cm) / 6000

The second is to use the formula 1CBM: 167KGS.

Actual weight VS volumetric weight

For example, if you send a shipment with a size of 100cm x 100cm x 100cm and a weight of 100kg, the logistics company will not charge you based on the actual weight (100kg). Due to the size of the package and the amount of space it takes up, the relationship between its size and weight must be converted.

So let’s go ahead and make the conversion.

Size and weight (express)=100cm × 100cm × 100cm/5000=200KGS

Dimension weight (air freight)=100cm × 100cm × 100cm/6000=167KGS

By air it will be 1m X 1m X 1m= 1CBM X 167 =167KGS

As you can see, the dimensional weight is significantly greater than its actual weight.

So if we choose air freight, the charged weight is 167KGS. But if we ship by DHL, Fedex, TNT and other express companies, the charged weight is 200KGS.

However, if the same size is 100cm × 100cm × 100cm and the weight is 300KGS, the charged weight will be based on the actual weight of 300KGS

This is standard practice in the logistics industry as the company is charged by the maximum amount.

Therefore, to reduce shipping costs, it may be necessary to compress the package and reduce its measured volume.

This can help ensure that the actual weight of the package, rather than the volumetric weight, is charged.

Air & Sea Freight

There are many advantages to choosing air over Chinese air. The main advantage is that the delivery time is significantly shortened. Depending on the chosen delivery destination, sea shipping can take up to a month or more. By contrast, air transport can take as little as five days to get goods from the factory to your office.

Delivery times vary depending on the shipping category chosen: Economy or express. By choosing air freight, you can save quite a bit of time. In fact, you may be surprised to learn that five percent of all international cargo is transported by air.

However, it is important to note that air freight is more expensive than sea freight. Despite faster delivery times, air freight is not preferred due to higher costs. However, if you believe that time is money and you can save a month of shipping time, then it is reasonable to pay additional shipping costs.

Many importers prefer a hybrid approach, opting for a portion to be shipped by air and the rest by sea. This strategy helps maintain sales while also keeping costs in check.
